Altmer (High Elf) Names

Altmer names are the most formal of the three playable mer races: three to four syllables, elongated vowels, and a cadence built to be announced at court. Male names typically close on a consonant or the suffixes "-mo" and "-no" (Ancano, Ondolemar, Fasendil); female names favour "-wen" or an open vowel (Elenwen, Ayrenn, Faralda). Harsh consonant clusters are avoided almost entirely, which is what gives the whole set its aristocratic sound.

Bosmer (Wood Elf) Names

Bosmer names run shorter and blunter than Altmer ones, leaning on animal and elemental imagery rather than plant imagery — the Green Pact makes vegetation something the Bosmer revere rather than name themselves after. Expect one or two syllables more often than three, and endings that stop cleanly instead of trailing off.

Dunmer (Dark Elf) Names

Dunmer names carry ancestral weight: House affiliation, Tribunal-era religion, and a history of exile all leave marks. The sound is harder than Altmer or Bosmer — more consonants, sharper stops — and family or House names (Redoran, Telvanni, Hlaalu, Dres, Indoril) often matter as much as the given name when you are building a character.

About Skyrim Elf Names

Skyrim has no generic elf. It has three playable mer races with three distinct naming systems, and searching for "Skyrim elf names" usually means you want one of them specifically. Altmer names are built for court. Bosmer names are built to be shouted across a forest. Dunmer names carry a House behind them. The list above is split by race for that reason; what follows is how each system actually works, and where the patterns come from.

1The Prefix-Suffix Machine Behind Early Altmer Names

Altmer naming is unusually well documented because the earliest games built it mechanically. In Arena and Daggerfall, male Altmer given names were assembled from a fixed set of twelve prefixes (Core, Corri, Cyre, Gan, Kala, Kelkemme, Lilland, Lovi, Mith, Saru, Sau, Soli) and twelve suffixes (dalf, las, lian, llon, man, mon, nar, ra, riil, ril, ron, tar). Every male Altmer name in those games is one of the 144 combinations. Later titles moved to hand-written names, but the phonology stuck: three to four syllables, elongated vowels, and endings on "-we", "-mo", "-no", "-ion" or "-wen". Knowing the generator behind the older names is the fastest way to produce new ones that sound right — pick a prefix shape, pick a suffix, and check that no harsh consonant cluster survives the join.

2Altmer, Bosmer, Dunmer: Three Sounds, One Word

Altmer names are the longest and smoothest, engineered to be announced without anyone wincing: Ondolemar, Ancano, Elenwen, Faralda, Nurelion. Bosmer names are shorter and blunter, ending cleanly rather than trailing off: Faendal, Malborn, Niruin, Anuriel, Elrindir. Notably they lean on animal and elemental imagery rather than plant imagery, because the Green Pact makes vegetation something the Bosmer revere rather than name themselves after. Dunmer names sit between the two for length but harder in texture, with more stops and a family name doing most of the cultural work: Brelyna Maryon, Teldryn Sero, Revyn Sadri, Avrusa Sarethi. Reading the three sets side by side is more instructive than any rule list — the difference is audible within a syllable or two.

3Family Names and What They Signal

Only the Dunmer routinely carry a family name that changes how a character is read. The Great Houses — Redoran, Telvanni, Hlaalu, Dres, Indoril — each imply a politics: Telvanni means wizardly isolation, Redoran means martial honour, Hlaalu means commerce and, since the events of Morrowind, a fall from favour. Altmer of high birth carry ancestral names too, but in Skyrim itself most Altmer you meet are Thalmor officials known by a single name and a title. Bosmer generally go by one name alone. If you want a character whose background is legible at a glance, the Dunmer system gives you the most to work with.

4Which Race Fits the Character You Are Building

Pick by role rather than by sound and the name will follow. Thalmor officers, College mages and self-assured scholars are Altmer territory — Ancano and Ondolemar are both Thalmor, Faralda and Nurelion are both spellcasters, and the register is uniformly formal. Thieves, archers, scouts and people living on the margins skew Bosmer: Niruin trains archery for the Thieves Guild, Malborn works as an informant, Faendal is a small-town archer. Mercenaries, alchemists, priests and Great House exiles skew Dunmer: Jenassa hires out as a ranger, Teldryn Sero as a spellsword, Avrusa Sarethi runs a farm apothecary. Choose the life first and the naming convention narrows on its own.

5Pronunciation Traps

The three systems fail differently when read aloud. Altmer names are long but regular — stress the second syllable and let the vowels run: on-DOL-eh-mar, el-EN-wen, far-AL-dah. Bosmer names are short enough to be read wrong confidently: Faendal is FAYN-dal rather than fa-EN-dal, and Niruin is NEER-oo-in. Dunmer names hide their stress: Brelyna is bre-LY-na, Jenassa jeh-NAS-ah, Dravynea drah-VIN-ay-ah. The vowel clusters are where most players stumble, particularly "ae" and "ea", which are two syllables in Bosmer names and usually one in Altmer ones. Every name in the list above carries a pronunciation guide for this reason; if you are naming a character you will voice at a table, read it out once before you commit.

6Checking a Name Before You Use It

Names on this page that come from the games are marked as such in their meanings, and the rest are written to match the conventions above. If you are the sort of player who wants only documented names, the Elder Scrolls community maintains per-race name lists compiled directly from the games, and cross-checking there takes a minute. Worth doing if your character will be sharing a table with someone who has played every title since Arena. Worth skipping if you simply want a name that sounds like it belongs in Skyrim, in which case the convention matters far more than the provenance.
